There are many different types of GIFTS. Each comes with a unique value. What comes to mind first are usually material gifts--a new phone, new workout clothes or gear, that "IT" pair of shoes or jeans, the top-seller book you've been wanting to read, sparkly jewelry, the latest and greatest golf clubs, a fast new sports car... All gifts with a monetary value.

There are gifts of SERVICE--feeding the homeless at the soup kitchen, shoveling the neighbor's walkway, taking a meal to a friend who just had surgery, volunteering at the senior center...  Or you might be blessed with OTHER gifts--the gift of being a good friend, the gift of empathy, the ability to see the best in everyone and everything, or even the gift of gab--the ability to talk...

So here we are again, holiday eating is about to begin. You want to enjoy the holidays and all that they offer, but can you do it without packing on the pounds? Yes, you can! And still eat your fav holiday foods --- and quite easily with a little planning. It all comes down to Portions and Choices. You DON'T have to cut out your favorite holiday foods. The trick is Portioning your plate.

Veggies=

1/2 plate if steamed/roasted/raw  Green salads, carrots, green beans, brussel sprouts, etc...

1/3 plate if creamy/casserole type--watch out for creamy sauces, scale down your portions on those creamier veggies and load up on the raw, roasted and steamed versions.

Protein = 1/4 - 1/3 plate  Turkey! White meat is lower on the fat and calorie count tha...

A few years back when our kids were in elementary school, we were looking for a way to do family service around the holidays. We got wind of an idea to save money we'd normally budget for dining out during one month and donate it to the local food bank. November was the month! We called it "No-eat-out-November." At the end of the month, we looked at how much money we had saved by not eating out and then sent a check to the local food bank. We felt pretty good about our donation, but it just wasn't complete. We wondered how to make it more meaningful especially for the kids, make it a real service rather than just a donation... The next few years as the kids got a little older, we decided to turn our idea into a better learn...

Did the election leave you feeling a little anxious, or maybe even excited about the prospect of a new leader? Quite normal responses, really. Did any of us deal with those emotions and decide that we needed a little "comfort food"? Perhaps yes, perhaps no. Did you experience one of those "I need to consume THE ENTIRE PACKAGE OF COOKIES to soothe my soul" situations, or maybe just mindless crunching on chips or crackers, or hey, better yet, what about the quite satisfying crunch of carrot sticks and celery? (No? Not salty enough? But it's good and solid stress-release crunching... :) Have these eating patterns left you feeling a little bit...say, guilty, or even a bit physically ill?

Well, then. Perhaps i...

Yep. Halloween came and went (and hopefully most of that candy "went" too!) I'm NOT one to say, "Don't have any candy." I'm pretty real when it comes to eating and the holidays. It's all about balance, moderation, and a little self control. If you choose to have halloween candy, just have one small piece or one small portion. You eat the whole bag, and well, it could lead you down a path that isn't so pretty in terms of your glycemic reactions and could possibly just stay stored in your body as, um, FAT. UGH! Really? Yes, really.

The University of Utah Health Sciences Radio interviewed Liver Specialist Dr. Juan Gallegos on how sugar is stored as fat. Fascinating stuff! Here's an excerpt from the interview:

There are many reasons to take inventory of your life--for better or for worse, as true growth only comes from being accountable for your choices and actions.  It takes raw honesty to look inward and admit to yourself how you are really doing, ranging from the goals you set, to the friends you have or want to have, to the foods you eat, or the exercise you do or don't do, as well as the type of energy you share with those around you.  Are you ready for the honesty? Are you ready to take the next step towards becoming a better, happier, healthier you? My purpose is to offer assistance, encouragement, and ideas to help you along the way, in the hopes that I can, in any small way, help you to see and be a better you!
